The Civic Museum of the Prehistory of Mount Cetona documents the various phases of human settlement in the area around Mount Cetona from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age. Before moving on to the actual archeological documentation, an introductory section illustrates the evolution of the landscape of this area on the basis of the geological and paleontological evidence.
The prehistorical human presence in this territory begins in the middle Paleolithic: Neandertal man lived in caves on Mount Cetona, leaving as traces of his passage tools made from sharpened stone and remains of hunted animals. After sporadic stays during the Neolithic period and the Copper Age, the area shows evidence of intense settlement in the second millennium B.C., especially at Belverde, on the eastern flank of the mountain, where human beings built huts, lived in the
protected areas under rocky overhangs, and buried their dead. This phase is richly documented by archeological finds which make up the main core of the museum. The visit ends with an area reserved for temporary exhibits.
The Belverde Archeological Natural Park is closely connected with the museum. Here can be visited some of the caverns that open up in the travertine rock, which have been fitted with lighting and other amenities, such as the “Grotta di San Francesco” the “Antro della Noce” and the “Antro del Poggetto”, used by prehistoric man for funerary rites or worship, and the ruins of outdoor dwellings. The park area is characterized by plant systems that show very little sign of human intervention, creating a sort of oasis in which the historical-archeological and the natural elements are intimately interwoven.
The Belverde Archeodrome, situated a short distance from the archeological area, is an educational itinerary created to complement and complete the visit to the museum and the park. The settings, structures, and objects reproduced take their inspiration from the two phases of prehistory best documented in this territory; reconstructed are part of a Bronze Age village, with lifesize huts and areas for artisan activities, and a cave settlement from the middle Paleolithic. These two sectors are connected by a marked path through the woods and along a rocky cliff over the Belverde caverns, from which sweeping views of the Valdichiana can be enjoyed. A special area has been set aside for a simulated archeological excavation. The tour begins in the Visitors Center of the park, which contains classrooms for educational activities, an information desk, and a rest and refreshment area. All the various sectors of the Archeodrome except the cave are accessible to persons with disabilities, and guided tours, theme workshops, and activities of experimentation, simulation, and animation with specialized personnel are held here.

Il Museo Civico per la Preistoria del Monte Cetona documenta le varie fasi del popolamento umano nel territorio che gravita intorno al Monte Cetona, a partire dal paleolitico fino alla fine dell’età del bronzo. La documentazione archeologica è preceduta da una esposizione nella quale è illustrata 1’evoluzione paesaggistica dell’area sulla base delle evidenze geologiche e paleontologiche.
Le vicende preistoriche del territorio iniziano nel paleolitico medio: l’uomo di Neandertal ha abitato alcune grotte del Cetona, lasciando come traccia del suo passaggio strumenti di pietra scheggiata e resti degli animali cacciati. Dopo una sporadica frequentazione durante il neolitico e 1’età del rame, si registra un intenso popolamento nel corso del II millennio a.C., soprattutto a Belverde, sul fianco orientale della montagna, dove l’uomo ha eretto capanne, abitato i ripari sotto roccia, seppellito i propri morti. Di questa fase ci resta una ricca documentazione archeologica che costituisce il nucleo principale del museo.
Il percorso si conclude con uno spazio riservato a esposizioni temporanee. Strettamente collegato al museo è il Parco Archeologico Naturalistico di Belverde: è possibile visitare alcune delle cavità che si aprono nel travertino, adeguatamente illuminate e attrezzate quali la grotta di San Francesco, gli antri della Noce e del Poggetto, frequentate dall’uomo per scopi funerari o di culto, e i resti degli abitati all’aperto. L’area del parco è caratterizzata dalla presenza di consorzi vegetali che mostrano scarsi segni di intervento antropico: una sorta di oasi in cui l’elemento storico-archeologico e quello naturalistico sono intimamente legati. L’Archeodromo di Belverde, situato non lontano dall’omonima zona archeologica, è un percorso didattico creato per completare e integrare la visita al Museo e al Parco. Le ambientazioni, le strutture e i manufatti riprodotti si ispirano alle due fasi della preistoria meglio documentate in questo territorio: sono stati ricostruiti una parte di un villaggio dell’età del bronzo, con capanne a grandezza naturale e aree per le attività artigianali, e un abitato in grotta del paleolitico medio. I due settori sono collegati da un itinerario nel bosco e lungo la balza rocciosa sovrastante le cavità di Belverde, da cui si gode un ampio panorama sulla Valdichiana. In una apposita area è allestito uno spazio per la simulazione degli scavi archeologici. La visita prende avvio dal Centro servizi del parco, una struttura in cui sono presenti aule per attività didattica, un punto informazioni, sosta e ristoro per i visitatori. Nei vari settori dell’archeodromo - interamente accessibile ai disabili ad eccezione della grotta - vengono effettuate visite guidate, laboratori tematici, attività di sperimentazione, simulazione e animazione con operatori specializzati.
