THE MIDDLE AGE IN BEVAGNA WITH THE GAITE MARKET UP TO THE 26TH OF JUNE

The market of the Gaite or Guaite is an evocation of the everyday life of the Middle Ages that takes its inspiration from the antique division of Bevagna in four districts.

Along the most suggestive streets and corners of the city, the population involves itself in the organization of handicraft shops, of typical markets of antique times and taverns, where one can taste dishes prepared according to the antique Umbrian recipes. The event is enriched of spectacles, concerts, exhibitions and conferences that, together with the competition of archery, are animating the already very busy evenings. Inspired by the habits described in antique medieval documents, Bevagna proposes the same intense atmosphere of the handicraft activities with noises and gestures forgotten by our times. In the small shops of "canapai", potters, dyers and strikers; capable handicraft maestro realize exclusive objects using the arts and the techniques of the Middle Ages.
The main square, in its splendid essentialness, is the most appropriate scenario for the Market of the "Gaite" and is the corner of the most representative moments like the opening and closing ceremony, as well as the competitions between districts; on this stage, the modern Bevagna unifies itself with the medieval Bevagna, and its inhabitants abandon their everyday clothes for materials and fabrics of noble and farmers, lawyers and handicraftsmen bringing back to life the traditional activity of their ancestors. The market of the "Gaite", although it is born recently, has already taken its countenance; the willing of the animators to focus on the evocation and entertaining, maintaining the highest loyalty to history, makes nowadays of this event one of the most significant offer among the similar existing expressions.

Il Mercato delle Gaite trae ispirazione dall'antica divisione di Bevagna (un comune di poco più di 5.000 abitanti della provincia di Perugia. È inserita tra i Borghi più belli d'Italia) in quattro quartieri denominati Gaite su cui si basava l'organizzazione amministrativa della città in epoca medievale Lo scopo della manifestazione è quello di ricostruire con la maggiore attinenza storica e dovizia di particolari la vita quotidiana degli abitanti di Bevagna nel periodo compreso tra il 1250 e 1350. A tal scopo, fin dal 1983 un gruppo di studiosi esamina accuratamente lo Statuto cinquecentesco del Comune di Bevagna da cui sono tratte le informazioni necessarie alla ricostruzione storica della vita politica, amministrativa, economica e sociale. Per dieci giorni, quindi, alla fine di giugno Bevagna fa un tuffo, in questo remoto passato: le antiche botteghe dei mestieri medievali riaprono i loro battenti e riprendono le attività e le strade si popolano di bevanati che in abiti d'epoca vivono la quotidianità dei loro avi mangiando, lavorando, giocando proprio come loro.

THE QUINTANA BAROQUE GAME IN FOLIGNO UP TO THE 18TH OF JUNE

The high point of the annual calendar of events in Foligno, the Quintana joust and the enormous build-up of festivities surrounding it, celebrating the baroque heydey of the city of Foligno, will run from June 4th to 18th.



It is considered by tradition the ‘centre of the world’. Foligno, in the heart of Umbria and Italy, is famous worldwide for the Quintana, the jousting tournament which in June and September renews the challenge among the knights of its ten wards. An exciting challenge where each knight, riding his own galloping horse, has to catch a series of rings (which gradually become smaller and smaller) hanging from a wooden statue called “Quintana”. It is a great feast of people, colours and passions, but also an accurate historical, scenic, iconographic and gastronomic reconstruction of the Italian Baroque. This is Foligno, with its 17th century palaces, museums, Baroque Oratories and the first edition of the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, printed here in 1472.

The Costumes

They date back to the period from 1580 to 1620. It is the Hispanic style transferred to Italy, in an area which was under the Pope’s rule. For the production of the costumes worn by the various characters of the Quintana, reference is made to paintings or other iconographic documents of that period: the most talented city tailors make the costumes using precious and valuable fabrics. Vintage jewellery made by goldsmiths of Foligno with precious materials complete the work.



The Rings

The rings, like the statue which has given the name to the tournament, are another unmistakable symbol of the challenge in Foligno. They are hand-made, in three different sizes of eight, six and five cm diameter, and are adorned with white and red strips, the colours of Foligno coat of arms. But why use rings? This type of tournament was introduced after the Roman quintana games where the knights had to hit a trunk or a pole driven in the ground. The knight had to hit, with a spear, circles of different sizes drawn on the trunk thus obtaining different scores and making the challenge more exciting. In later periods circles were drawn on the shields of the statues used for the tournaments; finally rings were used in the same way as they are in the present game.



The Taverns

The Taverns are the heart of the Wards. Each ward has got its own tavern where people meet and taste Umbrian traditional dishes, an occasion which brings back the atmosphere of the spectacular banquets typical of the Baroque period. The food served in the taverns by characters in costumes is prepared following the 17th century recipes. From the architectonic point of view the taverns are very interesting because they are located in the cellars or other parts of the old palaces in Foligno city centre. The wards compete also in the “Gareggiare dei convivi”, a competition of banquets which doesn’t consist only in food tasting, but it also includes cookery display, decorations and performances of musicians and actors in the setting of Late Renaissance and early 17th century. The taverns are open in June and September.








Dal 2 al 18 Giugno 2011 torna a Foligno la Giostra della Quintana, la manifestazione storica annuale (ripresa nel 1946 dopo un secolo di pausa, ndr) ispirata alla competizione equestre medioevale e che riporterà la città indietro nel tempo, quando le donne erano "Dame" e gli uomini "Messeri".

Con il termine "Quintana" si fa riferimento alla quinta via dell'accampamento romano, ove solitamente aveva luogo l'addestramento dei soldati che, armati di lancia, si lanciavano contro un fantoccio, chiamato comunemente "Saracino", cercando di infilare l'anello sospeso ad una mano dello stesso.

La Giostra della Quintana è la più conosciuta ed apprezzata competizione equestre italiana, tanto da essere indicata come "L'Olimpiade delle competizioni equestri": dieci cavalieri rappresentano i dieci rioni della città, che per l'occasione assumono un "Nome finto" (il cavaliere del rione Ammanniti è "Il Gagliardo", Badia ha "L'Ardito", Cassero "Il Pertinace", "Il Furente" per il Contrastanga, "Il Fedele" Croce Bianca, "L'Animoso" Giotti, "Il Generoso" La Mora, "Il Baldo" Morlupo, "Il Moro" Pugilli e "L'Audace" Spada), e gareggiano in armatura in sella ad un cavallo, con lo scopo di infilare i fatidici 9 anelli divisi in tre tornate con 3 diversi diametri sempre di dimensioni minori (10, 8 e 6 cm). Alla fine il cavaliere che riesce a realizzare il punteggio maggiore si aggiudica il Palio della Quintana, che verrà assegnato al termine della competizione al "Campo de li Giochi".

La prima gara, questa di Giugno, si tiene il sabato in notturna ed è denominata "La Sfida", mentre la seconda si disputa nel pomeriggio di una domenica di settembre, ed è chiamata "La Rivincita".

Ma la Giostra della Quintana non è soltanto il Palio. Infatti, la sera precedente la competizione, un corteo di 600 personaggi in costume sfilerà per le vie della città. Per non parlare delle taverne...
