from Chagall to Fellini, new exhibition in Perugia, 25th of September to 9th of January 2011

IN ENGLISH:
Dreams are the theme of the exhibit in Perugia “TEATRO DEL SOGNO da Chagall a Fellini” that opens September 25th and runs until January 9, 2011. The show will be set up inside the Galleria Nazionale and contains works by modern and contemporary artists influenced in some way by Freud. The theme of dream and the unconscious reminds me rather a lot of the recent exhibit at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence on De Chirico, Max Ernst et al, about which i wrote a long review.
In Perugia, you’ll find works by Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalì, Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, Renè Magritte, André Masson, Joan Mirò, Man Ray, Alberto Savinio, Yves Tanguy, Fernando Botero, Paul Klee, Max Klinger, Plinio Nomellini, Gaetano Previati. In terms of the contemporary artists from the international and italian scenes Sandro Chia, Mimmo Paladino, Julian Schnabel, and David Salle as well as video and installation work by the latests artist-stars Jan Fabre, Damien Hirst, Tony Oursler, Pinot Gallizio.

Festa della Rificolona, Firenze 6th and 7th of Sept.

According to Christian tradition, on September 8 of an unknown year somewhere near Nazareth the Virgin Mary was born.

In Florence, the large basilica of Santissima Annunziata is dedicated to her worship and thus her birthday is a day of celebration. Today, the religious celebrations are followed halfheartedly but at one time it was a great popular tradition where hundreds of peasants and farmers from the surroundings would make the long trek into the city to celebrate.

While the pilgrimage was the official reason for the trip into Florence, the farmers did not come into the city empty handed. It was a great opportunity to bring in their goods - cheeses, honey, the season's vegetables, and small hand made items. Thus September 8 was also a market day in the square of Santissima Annunziata.

In order to arrive to the religious services on time, many started their journey before the break of dawn. The farmers needed lanterns and these were often carried at the end of stick, candles protected by a frame made of thin cloth. The tradition continues today so that on the eve of the 8th of September, Florentines and other "pilgrims" carry paper lanterns at the end of a stick as they make their way through the streets of Florence, from Piazza Santa Croce to Piazza Santissima Annunziata, guided by the Cardinal. A speech is made in the square, followed by a final party in the square.

Today, a market is still held in the square in the form of a huge fair of organic produce on September 6 and 7.

So if you attend, you might wonder why the older children blow spit wads at the paper lanterns? It is said that this also goes back to when the peasants would make the pilgrimage in their best clothes, but as they were poor and overdressed by city dweller standards, they were derided (it is interesting to note that today Florentines call an overdressed, over made-up woman a rificolona). Florentine children would make their own, more beautiful, attractive lanterns in colored tissue paper to follow along, while others would target the paper lanterns with spit wads in an attempt to furtively hit them, make the candles fall over and set the lantern ablaze. It is very common for most lanterns to be burned by the end of the night.

Aphrodisiac Festival - Città della Pive - 9/12 of September 2010

Città della Pieve – It is an invitation into the sensual world of tastes, scents, words, sounds and sights brought about by aphrodisiacs. “Aphrodisiac" is the first Festival of this type in Italy.
This Festival has been created by the “Fabbrica delle Idee” Association and promoted with the sponsorship of the City of Citta’ della Pieve and the collaboration of the Sedicieventi Agency. Besides the fun and entertainment, such as tasting events, theme dinners organized by qualified chefs and multiethnic dinners accompanied by shows: the Festival will also offer cultural activities stimulating the knowledge of aphrodisiacs, such as creative workshops where people can learn about and experiment the extraordinary properties of these foods, figurative art exhibitions on the theme, film showings, theatre and dance shows, concerts and reading from literary works. There will also be seminars and debates and workshops where participants can learn the secrets of particular recipes thanks to courses in aphrodisiac cuisine held by culinary arts experts. Some of the most picturesque sites of this township in Umbria will host readings and conversations on the theme of aphrodisiacs and sexuality during this four-day festival.

Citta’ della Pieve is an ideal location for this Festival due to its traditions tied to the production of saffron but there are also other territories in Italy and abroad which will participate in the Festival as protagonists thanks to their “exciting” typical products. All with the objective of rendering “Aphrodisiac” an international reference point for all those interested in this topic.

Palio dei terzieri, Città della Pieve, Wednesday, 11. August 2010 - Sunday, 22. August 2010

It is a race between three carts representing the Terzieri of which they report the respective symbols.
The circuit of the race is 800 meters long. The departure takes place near the "Porta Nuova" and the race develops itself along the antique walls up to the "Piazza del Comune" (city hall square), the heart of the city. There, the “Mora”, a bust in wood representing the Saracen is waiting that the "bàlio" (man or woman from the people to whom is committed the conclusive gesture of the race) pulls away the key from his right hand to open the door of the tower and give the bell knock, symbolic sign of the conquest of the city.

About Luigi Buitoni

"Master Chef Luigi Buitoni says about himself, My ancestors, founders of the famous food industry, have transmitted to me the great love for the food and for the kitchen, a gift that I have always seen as the seeds of culinary adventure in a run of growth of my natural talents. The great food tradition and the Italian influence characterize my style.

Chef Luigi Buitoni's professional formation has seen some of the great zeniths of Italian cuisine. Angelo Paracucchi and Angelo Troianni were his first teachers in the culinary art. Luigi participated in professional culinary courses both near her Locanda dell'Angelo with Chef Angelo Paracucchi, and near restaurant Il Convivio with Chef Angelo Troiani in Rome. He worked with great international chefs, such Jean Francoise Daridon in the Restaurant Le Coq au Vin in Perugia, before making the great leap over the ocean. In the United States he brought the Italian cuisine to New York in the two famous restaurants Pasta and Dreams and Al Bacio, interpreting it with refined innovations while respecting the simplicity of it. Returning to Italy in 1991, he started the Inn of the Fortress in Paciano.

Through all these years Luigi accelerated his path as professional chef to a high-level by maintaining menus and the organization of the kitchens of great Italian and foreign restaurants, and tutoring other chefs (Sean Lynd of the restaurant Pasta Moon, San Francisco, California, USA and Chris Byron of the Restaurant Lindonis in Noosa Heads, Queensland, Australia) who came to his Inn to learn the secrets of the Italian cuisine.

Here you are some of the main restaurants where Luigi Buitoni played the role of master chef: New York City, Al Bacio and Pasta and dreams- Boston, il Bico - British Vergin Island, Virgin Gorde, Little Dix Bay Hotel - Orvieto, Decugnano dei Barbi - Perugia, I Quattro gatti.

UMBRIA JAZZ PERUGIA, FROM THE 9TH TO THE 18TH OF JULY

Since 1973 the Italian summer in Umbria goes with the rhythm of Umbria Jazz. This relatively small region, at the heart of Italy, is hosting one of the greatest Jazz events in Italy. 10 days of concerts; 9 different stages (including the ones at the main Arena, the theatres, squares and restaurants); more than 220 great music events, most of which free. During these days saxophones, trumpets, guitars spread their sounds along the streets of Perugia.

The eclectic line of Umbria Jazz Festival wants to tell the spectators at what extent music can be different and that all types of good music deserve attention. Following this motto, Umbria Jazz stages host the main Jazz players (Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, BB King … to mention a few of them), but also pop music groups famous all over the world, such as the REM that played last past years.

Mark Knopfler, Mario Biondi, the Incognito, Pat Metheny group, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Manhattan Transfer, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, Tony Bennet and Sonny Rollins are just an example of the great artists that will make 2010’s edition as success full as the 37 previous ones.

The colors of Giotto, up to the 26th of September 2010 - Assisi

The Colors of Giotto - The Basilica of Assisi, between virtual restoration and restitution. This is an innovative exhibition, an art project of great stature, where the visitor is actively involved in restoration work and is enabled to know the works of Giotto, both physically and virtually.
In the Saint Nicola Chapel in the Lower Basilica are ongoing restoration works on the Franciscans frescoes of Giotto.
During these months visitors are given the chance to stand on scaffolding to admire the restoration works, so to know actively and timely the peculiarity of this art and the painstaking work of the restorers.
The Chapel of Saint Nicholas is presented and therefore designed as a "work in progress", an example of recovery "physical" work of art...
In perfect match to this instead, in the Palace of Monte Frumentario (not far from the Basilica), is a recovery "virtual" work of art.
Franciscan stories that are reconsidered and returned to the public through high definition technology.
The virtual frescoes can be compared with their current appearance, through a series of screens, touch screen placed at each group stage.
On the occasion of eighth centenary of Pope Innocent III, the exhibition proposes to scale the fresco dedicated to the Confirmation of the Rule of Saint Francis, just by Pope Innocent III.
Also a section for setting up and can get virtually in the fresco, where the 3D scene comes alive with the voices of the characters.
A wonderful progect designed and coordinated by the CNR, by Eva Pietroni and Francesco Antinucci.
Colors of Giotto is an initiative promoted by the city of Assisi with the collaboration of the Sacred Convent, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture through Regional Directorate, the Superintendence of Umbria competent Higher Institute for Conservation and Restoration, the Umbria Region and the National Research Council, with support from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia and organizational coordination of Civita. The catalog is published by Silvana Editoriale.

Gubbio - each 15th of May - Festival dei Ceri

It is not easy to "tell the story" of the Festival of the Ceri. It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest Italian folklore display. The festival has always played a fundamental role in the heart of the Eugubina community. An in-depth study of the festival's origins and numerous meanings is something that we are happy to leave to scholars. Its origins are obscure, it is enough to know that there are two basic hypotheses: one religious and one pagan.

The first, which is well-documented and set, out sees the festival as a solemn act of devotion on the part of the Eugubini towards their Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini which started in 1160, the year of his death. Since then, every 15th May, the eve of the day of mourning, the devotional offering to the patron Saint is a fixed appointment for the people of Gubbio who are said to have taken part in a great mystical procession, carrying candles all around the town and up Mount Ingino (where since 11th September 1194 the body of Saint Ubaldo lies, in the church which bears his name). Certainly, the Eugubini dearly loved their important townsman, especially from 1154 onwards, when Gubbio conquered no less than 11 allied cities. The victory seemed miraculous, and was also thanks to the intervention of Bishop Baldassini.

The wax candles, offered by the Arts and Crafts corporations, probably became difficult to transport with the passing of time, and towards the end of the 16th century were substituted by three wooden structures, which were agile and modern. They have been replaced a number of times. They have kept their original form up until today and on the same date; they follow the same route to the same place.

The second theory, which is more suspect and hypothetical, sees the festival as being a continuation of a pagan festival in honour of Ceres, goddess of the harvest, reaching us after having come through the glory of communes, renaissance power, papal domination and the battles of the Risorgimento.

Steve McCurry exhibition in Perugia up to the 5th of September

Steve McCurry (born February 24, 1950) is an American photojournalist best known for his photograph, "Afghan Girl" that originally appeared in National Geographic magazine.

McCurry began studying film history cinematography and filmmaking at Penn State in 1968, but ended up getting a degree in theater arts and graduating cum laude in 1974. He became very interested in photography when he started taking pictures for the Penn State newspaper called The Daily Collegian.[1]
[edit] Career

His photojournalism career began with his coverage of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. McCurry disguised himself in native dress and hid his film by sewing it into his clothes. His images were among the first of the conflict and were widely published. His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad.

McCurry continued to cover international conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq war, Beirut, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Gulf War, and Afghanistan. McCurry's work has been featured worldwide in magazines and he is a frequent contributor to National Geographic. He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1986.
[edit] Recognition

McCurry's most recognized photo is that of "Afghan Girl", a previously unidentified Afghan refugee. The image itself was named as "the most recognized photograph" in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. The photo has also been widely used on Amnesty International brochures, posters, and calendars. The identity of the "Afghan Girl" remained unknown for over 15 years until McCurry and a National Geographic team located the woman, Sharbat Gula, in 2002.

Although McCurry shoots both in digital and film, his admitted preference is for transparency film. Based in New York, McCurry offers weekend photography workshops, as well as extended 2-week digital photography workshops in Asia (currently scheduled in Nepal, India, and Burma.

Here in Perugia (palazzo nazionale) 240 shots and 6 tematics areas!
