Osteria le logge our best for Siena!

OSTERIA LE LOGGE ABSOLUTELY THE BEST IN SIENA

You know we love great and good food and wine, this is the reason why we use to travel our land in order to find the best place in the area. Osteria le Logge close to Piazza del campo in Siena, doesn’t have any competitor.

In 1977 Gianni Brunelli, the owner, created the idea of the typical Tuscan Osteria in Siena.

He discovered the perfect location, and antique Drogheria of the XIX century and he started to research the best quality for food and wine (with more than 200 labels) without expensive mark-up.

We love to start at the Osteria with Ca’ del bosco Saten ’05, and then with a Franz Haas «Manna» ’08, or Jermann «Vintage Tunina» ’07 for first dishes, and continue with a Lisini ’05 or Aviognonesi «Desiderio » ’06. (Is har to remember all the bbest wines, the list is more than 30 pages!!!). Remember to have the Tuscan meditation before going out with the Castell’In Villa Vin Santo ’93!!!

For our own opinion, their best primi include pici al torchio (typical Tuscan and Umbrian hand made pasta with a beef excellent ragu), malfatti all'Osteria (spinach-and-ricotta balls in a creamy tomato sauce) and ravioli ripieni di pecorino e menta (ravioli stuffed with sheep's-milk cheese and mint in a sauce flavored with port).

Meatier palates can enjoy the bistecche di vitello (tender veal steaks, 1,5 kg is a portion!) or delicate carpaccio di pesce spada affumicato (smoked swordfish sliced and pounded into thin disks), or a sublime Ragu Pigeon. Please remember that in order to be really fresh, the menu change seasonally

The staff is friendly and very accommodating. Food is excellent, and portions are large enough to make you feel satisfied, without feeling too full.
The tables on the terrace are lovely as from there you can sit and watch life in Siena.

This restaurant does get busy at lunchtimes, so we would either recommend making a reservation or being content to wait a few minutes.

Closed on Sunday - TEL + 39 057748013

Last but not least Gianni Brunelli is also one of the best Brunello di Montalcino producer with “le Chiuse di sotto”. You can book a visit to the cave. It's an experience that recall the genuine and true past of the art of making wine!

In Italiano!

The best cheese in Tuscany: the pecorino!

The best cheese in Tuscany: the pecorino!

Pienza is the heart of the “Pecorino” – sheep cheese, and organizes every year, on the second Sunday of September, the “Fiera del Cacio” or the Festival of the local sheep cheese.

This unique sheep’s milk cheese gets its name from the ancient city of Pienza, located just a few miles from Montepulciano. Pecorino di Pienza is considered the best pecorino produced in the Crete Senesi, a specific area within the province of Siena. Sheep were probably being raised in Tuscany since before the Etruscans and Pliny the Elder documented their presence during the Roman Age. Pecorino di Pienza, a favorite of Lorenzo il Magnifico, is a cooked-milk cheese made with whole, raw milk from sheep of the sarda breed (or possibly appenninica or sopravvissana). The sheep are raised out in the open and graze exclusively on the local flora. The aromas of rare plants that grow in the clay soil of the Crete Senesi (wormwood, meadow salsify, juniper, broom, burnet …) can be sensed in the sheep’s milk. The milk enters immediately into the cheese-making process.

It is coagulated with veal rennet, or rennet made from the stamen of wild artichoke, marinated in vinegar and salt, or left to dry and then placed in warm water. The wheels of cheese mature in very humid cellars and periodically their walnut leaf-wrapped rinds are damped first with Tuscan olive oil, then with grease and wax. The round wheels can vary from 5.5 to 8.5 in. in diameter and from 2 to 4.5 lbs. After about 40 to 60 days the fresh cheese is ready to be consumed and has a soft, slightly spicy flavor. If left to age for five to twelve, or even eighteen (the best for grating) months, the cheese will have a 40% fat content, a full, long-lasting flavor. This aged cheese is not spicy, but has a tannic aftertaste and a soft, crumbly texture in the mouth. Pecorino di Pienza pairs perfectly with chestnut honey from Montalcino and the wines of the region, such as Rosso di Montepulciano or Nobile di Montepulciano.

A wonderful day-trip to Pienza and Montepulciano, almost neighboors, will provide you one of the best eno-gastronomic experiences ever!
